Recipes

A recipe is a list, not a number

Recipes are built at ingredient level. Every total on one — energy, macros, Nutri-Score — is derived from that list, so it moves when the list moves.

01 · Ingredients

Built from weighed ingredients

Each ingredient is its own food with its own grams and its own source. A recipe that came out of the barcode scanner and the AI parser shows you which lines are which.

Change one ingredient and the recipe's totals change. Nothing is stored as a flat calorie count to go stale.

02 · Scaling

Change the servings, every figure follows

Servings are a divisor, not a label. Move it from four to six and the per-serving energy, all three macros, the saturated fat, sugars and salt all recompute from the ingredient totals.

Log two portions and it is the same arithmetic again, at the weight you actually served.

03 · Covers

A cover image, so the library is scannable

A recipe takes one photo. It is the only image anywhere in the product, it is yours, and it is stripped of its metadata before it is stored.

Cover keys are never reused, so a replaced cover gets a new address rather than changing an old one.

Nutri-Score · two treatments

The same formula, two different levels of authority

A computed score and a certified one are drawn differently on purpose. They answer the same question from very different inputs.

Certified · from Open Food Facts

Filled, on the five-step scale, exactly as the product carries it. This grade was calculated from a manufacturer's declared panel for one specific packaged product and stored in Open Food Facts.

It arrives with the barcode. Nomtally does not recalculate it, and does not overrule it.

Computed · from your ingredients
Nutri Bestimated

Outlined, single letter, labelled estimated. Derived by running FSA-NPS — the same formula — over your ingredient list, your grams and your substitutions.

The formula is identical. The input is a recipe you typed, so the result cannot claim to be a certified grade for a specific product, and it is not drawn as one.

Both read B. Only one of them was certified, and you can tell which at a glance without reading a footnote. Anywhere the two appear in the same list — a recipe containing scanned products — the treatments stay distinct.

NextInsightsWritten from the day's own figures

Where every number came from.

Nomtally records what you ate, which of four paths each figure arrived by, and what it left in the day's budget.
